Danica Hills, 18, of Hinton, Alberta, tragically lost her life on Monday evening, February 23, 2026, following a devastating collision involving a pickup truck and a semi-truck east of Jasper.
Emergency crews were called to the scene on Highway 16 at approximately 7:15 p.m.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), 17-year-old driver Kayla Peackock of the pickup and Danica, who was a passenger, were both declared deceased at the scene.
The driver of the semi-truck was not injured. Investigators believe road conditions may have been a contributing factor in the crash.
Danica was a student at Harry Collinge High School, where news of her passing has left classmates, teachers, and staff in profound shock.
The Grande Yellowhead Public School Division issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the tragic loss of two students and confirmed that classes were cancelled to allow the school community time to grieve.
Trauma response teams and counsellors have been mobilized to provide immediate and ongoing support.
Danica was also a member of the Jasper U18 Bearcats hockey team, a tight-knit group of young athletes who shared not only the ice but lasting friendships. Jasper Mayor Richard Ireland said the community is devastated by the loss of two young lives from a neighbouring town, calling the tragedy “beyond comprehension.”
Those who knew Danica describe her as vibrant, kind-hearted, and full of promise.
At just 18 years old, she was stepping into adulthood, with dreams, ambitions, and a future that seemed limitless. Her presence on the ice and in the classroom reflected determination, teamwork, and a quiet strength.
The loss of Danica and her teammate has deeply shaken Hinton, Jasper, and surrounding communities.
Friends, family members, teammates, and educators are leaning on one another for support as they navigate an unimaginable grief.
Community members continue to hold Danica’s family in their thoughts and prayers during this heartbreaking time. Her life, though far too short, leaves behind memories of laughter, friendship, and youthful spirit that will not be forgotten.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.
