Kayla Lorene Peacock, 17, of Hinton, Alberta, tragically lost her life on February 23, 2026, in a collision on Highway 16 east of Jasper.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene around 7:15 p.m. after reports of a crash involving a pickup truck and a semi-truck.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed that Kayla, who was driving the pickup, was declared deceased at the scene. Investigators believe icy or challenging road conditions may have been a contributing factor.
Kayla was a student at Harry Collinge High School and a proud member of the Jasper U18 Bearcats hockey team. The Grande Yellowhead Public School Division stated that counsellors and trauma response teams are providing support to students and staff as the school community grieves.
Mayor Richard Ireland shared condolences on behalf of Jasper, expressing heartbreak over the loss of two young lives just beginning their journeys.
Kayla is remembered as a spirited and dedicated young athlete whose presence brought energy and friendship to those around her.
Her passing has left an immeasurable void in the lives of family, friends, and teammates.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by her family.
